Striding Arches

February 27, 2026 · Cairnhead, Dumfries & Galloway

On day eight of the residency we walked to the first of the Striding Arches, a permanent landscape work by Andy Goldsworthy — three self-supporting red sandstone arches placed on hilltops around the natural amphitheatre at Cairnhead, designed so that each arch is always visible from the other two.

Each person chose a single colour — green, brown, or gray — and photographed only objects of that colour throughout the walk. The resulting collages show how form, texture, and presence emerge from a single constraint applied across an entire landscape.
